PHYS 206

Waves and Modern Physics (3 credits)

Simple harmonic motion, wave propagation, superposition, stationary waves, Doppler effect, interference, diffraction, photoelectric effect, Compton effect, Bohr’s atom. radioactivity, fission, fusion, relativity,…… are you still listening?
* PHYS 226 is the lab associated with this course, though you must register separately for that. (You do not need to take both PHYS 206 and PHYS 226 at the same time)
  • If you’re taking this course, there’s a great chance you’re doing so since it is required for your program. If you do not see the beauty in this course, it’s going to be a long semester for you. Personally, doing problems on time dilation and length contraction blew my mind away. The content of this course is utterly fascinating. There is lots of problem solving and math related questions so be prepared.
It doesn’t have to be this way
My favorite physics joke:
Heisenberg and Schrödinger get pulled over for speeding.
The cop asks Heisenberg “Do you know how fast you were going?”
Heisenberg replies, “No, but we know exactly where we are!”
The officer looks at him confused and says “you were going 108 miles per hour!”
Heisenberg throws his arms up and cries, “Great! Now we’re lost!”
The officer looks over the car and asks Schrödinger if the two men have anything in the trunk.
“A cat,” Schrödinger replies.
The cop opens the trunk and yells “Hey! This cat is dead.”
Schrödinger angrily replies, “Well he is now.”
