Michael Glazerman R.I.P.

This was a sad week for Concordia, especially those in the chemistry/biochemistry department.

This past Sunday, April 17th 2016, Michael Glazerman passed away at the young age of 34.

Michael was a pure genius, to say the very least. Michael was expected to graduate this semester in Honours Chemistry. Michael captured almost every award there was to offer, from the NSERC research award to being a faculty dean’s scholar, and so many more. Michael was also a TA for several chemistry courses and even tutored students on the side. Michael’s resume and accomplishments are only a fraction of the greatness he encompassed.

Unfortunately, I only got to know Michael recently, just weeks before his passing. I was trying to find someone to help clarify some chemistry concepts to me for an upcoming exam. My usual “chemistry guy” was not available so he gave me Michael’s number. The moment I met up with him at school, we immediately hit it off. We had so much in common, and we tumbled into deep conversations over the great mysteries of the universe. What struck me most was, how every passerby-er in the department seemed to know him and wanted to stop to chat with him. I was able to tell immediately that Michael was a special individual whom was admired and respected by all. His knowledge of chemistry and physics were unlike anything I’ve seen before. I was asking him difficult questions and he would cite a book, and would be able to quickly pull up the page on his computer. He knew so much and was so passionate about it. He told me he was graduating this spring and was planning on going for a Masters in physics the following year.

Michael and I shared many friends. I wish I would have gotten to know him better or even met him earlier. There is so much don’t know about him. To this moment, it feels eerie that I just managed to meet him once before he left us, forever. I could never have imagined how a death of someone I just met could sting so hard. I miss him. For the people who knew him better, the pain must be unbearable.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.

  • His parents: Vicki and Leslie, brother of Samuel (Olivia Pipe)
  • And his loving soulmate and partner-in- crime Florence Couvrette-Dupuis
